Savages
Savages. Often 'naked'. Used to be a cliche', worthy of Bouvard and Pecuchet. Now a defunct stock phrase, owing to PC. But a photo in the Evening Standards made me smile. It shows an elderly British couple flanked by two African friends in Kenya. The Africans wear shirts and trousers, as self-respecting, civilised human beings. But the two Brits are semi-naked, as if on a beach. The contrast is striking.
Quite apart from the rather pathetic, ludicrous effect resulting from a couple of elederly folks displaying their sagging flesh, it made me reflect: 'There is no doubt who are the savages now'.
